On Esha completing 19 years

 Why do you do Esha?

I don’t know. Why do we breathe?

On 5th January, Esha (www.eshabraille.org) quietly completed 19 years and stepped into the 20th.

And that, led to a moment of introspection.

Of course, the first thing that comes to mind is how Esha has truly remained a volunteer-driven initiative. In this year, I hope that we are able to deepen ties with our existing volunteers. That has been a long-standing area of improvement.

The second is that the last few years of uncertainty might have been necessary, but they have put us back a little bit. So, we will have to work a little harder to make up for lost time.

The third is that now that there is clarity of purpose and a clear boundary around what we want to do, it should be a top priority to get things going. Being a primarily action-oriented person, this one comes easily to me.

AND, given that there is much to do, we will take a minute to list the work done so far, and then focus on the future.

We:

·       Were able to talk about Braille enabled visiting cards and create a service center in India. This service center, run by Venkatesh, services braille visiting cards all over the country.

·       Were able to create an online audio library in Indian languages which required no sign up and no subscription – in 2010.

·       Were able to create and help deliver a theater workshop that was conducted by a blind professional for sighted participants. It was a super hit!

·       Were able to create a structured student volunteering program, and then run it every year, from 2012 onwards. Later, such programs have become a lot more frequent.

·       Do some very interesting work in research in our sector.

It was good work, and we are grateful for being the medium through which it was done.

So, if you are reading this post, do join us.

Esha currently has three clear verticals. You can help in any one.

A.    Knowledge Democracy – www.clabil.org /audio.php –

·       Content – Needed in Nepali.

·       Please help us take the library to more stakeholders.

·       We need help in publishing our content on archive.org – we started a channel but have not been able to upload enough content.

B.    Sensitisation – When I started the season of inclusion in December 2023, I thought it would be as simple as going to a public place and hosting a blind walk. It wasn’t. We realised that we now need organising support to conduct a Blind Walk. So, if you are looking for an employee or student volunteering opportunity for your own office/school/college, do consider a Blind Walk.

More details here: https://eshabraille.org/current-projects/ and here https://eshabraille.org/blind-walks/

C.   Research – Saving the best for the last. Data driven policy making needs data. One of the most important gaps we have is independent research. So, Esha’s third vertical is going to be research. So far, two out of our three research reports are in the public domain:

Career Choices:

https://eshabraille.org/3d-flip-book/career-choices-of-the-visually-disabled/

Attitudes towards specially-abled colleagues:

https://eshabraille.org/research-report-attitude-of-the-sighted-towards-specially-abled-colleagues/

This year, we are planning follow-up research – What is the workplace experience of both sighted and blind colleagues, in an inclusive workplace?

We are currently in the research design stage. Amit Jain, who is a Fellow from IIM Cal and now a professor at SPJIMR is mentoring the research. If you have inputs that can help, experiences to share, that will be very welcome.

Otherwise, you can do one of the following:

1.    Join the research. All responses are confidential and very important. Data gathering is likely to be from April – Aug 2024.

2.    Connect us to researchers. This is going to be a behavioral observation + conversation study and we are going to need good researchers.

Long ago, I used to send an annual update on Esha which was emailed to all Friends of Esha. That will, if all goes well, be resumed this year. Please do wish us luck as we start this journey, and, hop on!

First Blind Walks

And the first Blind Walks of the season will begin this weekend - Saturday in Delhi and Sunday 4 30 pm at the Leisure Valley park in Gurgaon.

Be there!

Meeting India's National and International Level para Judo Players

Junta Rehab Center for the Blind has been operational since 1996.

It works in an important and overlooked area - rehabilitation of late blind individuals.

Recently, the school has found amazing success in the world of para Judo. Players trained at their facility have won national and international medals.

Today, we went to meet them and recorded some excellent videos with the players, their coach, and the Principal of the Institute.

See them on our Youtube channel:

Talk on Esha

Talking about Esha is our favourite thing to do. But listening to this chat made us realise that this conversation, these subjects - they are important.

Even if we live them every day, we need to talk about it.
Thank you, Sid Baliga, for taking the time to talk to us and helping us spread the word!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqBBP1gFMBA

This was such a pleasure, and reiterated, for us, and hopefully, for the listeners, why the work of Esha is small, but not insignificant.

Esha Summer Project 2021 and CLABIL update - More files added

We just uploaded the files recorded during the Esha Summer Project 2021.

This year, the mandate was to find content from our own families, and to record in Indian languages.

19 files were recorded in Hindi and Marathi. Its a good start. Our metro children are very uncomfortable with Hindi and with finding content from their families, but after the initial hiccups, they did manage to talk to their grandparents and record some delightful content.

The students recommended for a Certificate of Commendation are:

Rhiditya Windlass

Shlok Palekar

Archit Pargaonkar

:) Congratulations, all 3, and thank you for creating such good audio for the CLABIL project.

All the files are now available in the Esha Audio Library - www.clabil.org/audio.php

3 more files from Arthashastra were also added today.

CLABIL Android app taken down for now

Last year, after our research on the knowledge acquisition patterns of the knowledge have-nots, we arrived at some key insights:
A. After a 12 hours work day, no weekly off, they don't want gyaan. They want entertainment to wind down.
B. The social networks are very strong. So if they want any information, they are more likely to go to the social network than the internet. The converse is also true - knowledge transmitted through the social network finds more acceptance and credibility than knowledge generally available on a knowledge platform.

Accordingly, at this time, we have taken CLABIL off the App store. The web interface - www.braillecards.org/audio.php is live and being updated constantly. But the app has been taken down for now. The cost of hosting the app database alone was higher than the cost of the entire project, and the app had found very little adoption. We knew from the research that it was, indeed, a DESIGN issue, and we need to go back to the drawing board.

We are currently working to redesign the app and combine it with some pilot behaviour change models, and the results thereof.

The next stage in this journey is this:
1. We will do the report writing of the work done so far.
2. Secondary research and Detailed interviews with people who have successfully led knowledge initiatives to identify the key parameters that go into a successful knowledge program.

We are, of course, looking for volunteers for both. The ideal people will be Grade 10,11,12 students who want to understand social change from a macro, strategic perspective and want to understand how social change is a result of deep strategy executed with everyday rigour, not a feel-good activity that people just turn up to do.

We are at eshabraille@gmail.com

Thank you!

Summer Project 2019 - Report

This year's summer project was one of the most productive Summer Projects that Esha has ever had.

Special Thanks to the Project Managers who managed this baton relay race so seamlessly that I had no idea when the project management changed!

They also managed volunteer selection, monitoring and reporting, and closure. Compared to the previous years, when our volunteers pick assignments and then drop out, this year, the sudden dropout number was very, very less. People were selected well, so they stuck to their assignments and the assignments were delivered high quality, on time, and with great professionalism.

The 3 main threads of this year's Summer Project were:

1. Content - Shreyas Kadam and Aprita Mary did an outstanding job of writing some high quality articles on the Esha blog.

2. Esha Research Project - Jainish Malhotra, Vikram Gaur, and Meenakshi Agarwal contributed to the secondary and primary research on this project. Their work was awe-inspiring because the insights that they picked up from the field, and their enthusiasm, can only be experienced, not described.

3. Voice Recording - This was, like every year, the most selected summer project option. This year, we laid special emphasis on career oriented content. So  you will now find previous years questions papers for upto the last 10 years for the following examinations:
A. SSC
B. NTPC
C. RRB
D. Civil Services Exam - Mains and Prelims
E. CLAT
F. CAT
G. SBI PO Exams

On the literature side, we added:
A. Viky Arya's poetry
B. Akbar Birbal in Marathi.
C. A story by Smita

And outside the Summer Project, Anil Bhagat ji, who is a long-time Friend of Esha, converted easy law (a long-pending dream of mine) from nyaaya.in to audio for our users.  He also converted the text of the entire Draft National Education Policy - 2019 (NEP-2019), so that the print disabled can give their feedback on the policy too. This initiative of his was much appreciated by Vasudha Kamat mam, who is part of the NEP Committee.

It was SUCH a pleasure to be a part of the Summer Project 2019. Here's to every year being like this, or better. :)

Braille Cards no longer part of Esha

You know that moment when you have invested years in nurturing something, and finally, it grows wings, and learns to fly?

That moment, I have now learnt, is a moment of deep personal satisfaction.

Chandrashekar and Venkatesh have incorporated a legal entity and are now fully capable of handing ALL braille cards related business. They have been running the business independently for many years now, and have literally hundreds of satisfied corporate clients.
Going forward, Esha will no longer be doing Braille cards under its banner. We will direct all enquiries to these bright young entrepreneurs, of course. :)

Online Audio Library Updated with files from Summer Project 2019 - 6908 files now

The online library has just been updated. We have retired quite a few files this time, and added over 120 files from the Summer Project 2019, making this one of our most productive Summer Project years yet.

A special shout out to the project managers who made the Summer Project 2019 possible - Atharva Kale, Vaishnavi Choppalli, and Nidhi Reddy. These 3 young students did a relay race and ensured that the summer project got effective project management with no gaps. Hats off, people. You convince us that the future is very bright. If you can do project management like a boss before seeing your 20th birthdays, you are definitely onto something super special.

Special thanks also to our summer project interns who helped create the catalog. Some of them contributed immensely to the research project of Esha - Understanding the Knowledge Acquisition Behaviour of the Knowledge Have Nots.

Most of the new files added in this release - over 300 of them, are in the areas of competitive exam content, as required by the network. There are also common Indian Laws, and the entire Draft Education Policy in Audio.

Please check out the new library at www.braillecards.org/audio.php

The responsibilities of the citizen - Kautilya Arthashastra

As part of the online audio library, we are recording the original Chanakya Arthashastra .I am doing most of the recording myself, because i really do want to read this book, and also because then it helps me create good stories for my child. Arthashastra is a treatise on economics, strategy, public administration and politics combined. It is an incredibly fantastic book and proves to me, yet again, how advanced was the thought process of the people who came before us.

Today, however, i recorded a really special chapter, which i really want to share with the rest of you.

This is the chapter on the duties of the citizen. Sample some gems:
A. Every householder has to let the civic administration know that they have guests. The origin, destination and purpose of these guests must be disclosed, otherwise the householder will be considered complicit if the guests are found to be committing a crime.
Even if the guests do not commit a crime, the householder will be fined 3 panas per night for not disclosing details of guests housed in the private home.

B. All visitors to the republic (janapada) must be registered. They can stay with their professional or personal acquaintances if they know someone. Else, the owner of the hotel must inform the civic administration about them and must allow them to stay only after the right approval.

C. If an officer of the law omits to conduct a check where he was supposed to check, and this lapse leads to the successful committing of a crime, the said officer will be punished at the same level as the committer of the crime.

D. Yes, there was death penalty for rape in certain cases, and in most other cases, the severity of the punishment was very high - the most severe, or the second most severe category.

To know more about the duties and responsibilities of the civic administration, and the duties of the citizens, check this audio file out:

November 2018 Roundup

What a lovely November this has been!
In this month, we:
A. Conducted Read Fests at KPMG, Moodys, and SOIL (School of Inspired Leadership)
B. Did a Trust Walk with the German exchange students at The Shri Ram School, Aravali
C. Conducted Blind school visits for the Grade 7 students of The Shri Ram School, Moulasari, to the NAB Center for Women, Hauz Khas
D. Added some more Braille Cards customers, one of whom is a very prominent one.
E. We also visited the Namchi Blind School in South Sikkim to take stock of their learning needs. This is one of the remote schools from which we take requirements for our audio library. We noted the requirements for the next year and also gave them a free resource which they will use every day now - the daily newspaper for children, which is an initiative of our founder. This paper will now be shared with them every day at no cost. The school will use the in built screenreader of Adobe to read out the news to all the children in the assembly. Currently, the teachers have to make the news every morning in Braille and then the children read it out.

The audio content recorded during these Read Fests will particularly help Indian history fans (Original Kautilya Arthashastra in Hindi), and IAS aspirants (All 2018 Mains papers and Prelims papers recorded in audio)

80 files in English, Hindi, Marathi, Punjabi, Bengali, Tamil, Oriya and Malayalam were recorded. These will be a part of the next release, which is due this week.

The Blind School visits almost always make us very happy, because they help us sensitise a lot of children, and the children who walk out of that school truly understand the key words that we stand for - Dignity, Empowerment, and Enablement.

On the technical front, we made the code of the mobile app - CLABIL, more robust, and are working to improve the code even further. We have heated discussions on security for the mobile app, and I love those discussions!

Here's to an equally outstanding December.

Lead The Rest Through Read Fest!

As the doors opened for the Read Fest to be held at School of Inspired Leadership, we could see a plethora of eager volunteers gearing up for the same!
As the flurry picked pace, the excitement grew paramount with participants enquiring for the same, curiosity & inquisitiveness pretty evident from their expressions!

"So.. What's This About? Can You Brief Us?"
                                                                                      - Anudeep, Student SOIL
The Esha Volunteers left no stone unturned be it through providing information to students or motivating them to record.

Needless to say, the students were very excited & eager to help.
Help implied they had to miss classes & record audio content for Esha..
"We want to help! But we have classes till 6:15! How to go about it?"
                                                                                                - Analytics Student, SOIL

It seemed like an uphill task to convince them to stay back after classes.
The time had come to enlighten the students on how just 10-20 minutes of their time could help a Blind person in understanding & interpreting the world he lives in, in a better way.

The Esha Volunteers did succeed in getting recordings in languages ranging from Tamil to Bengali.
The mission resonated well with the students & they could well understand the impact this was creating on the society they live in..

" Yes, it did take time. Yet, I feel like I've done something of greater value today!"
                                                                                                   - Marketing Student, SOIL

The Impact could be felt in the conviction & tenacity the Participants showed despite the fact that there were multiple takes at recording owing to technical glitches & noise disturbances.

" We thank you with all our heart & soul. You guys have done a great job!"
                                                                                            - Shivangi Sharma, Volunteer Esha

In Picture: Two Students supporting Esha in Audio Recordings in Bengali & Oriya at Read Fest

The Experience was enriching & provided lots of learning to both SOIL Students as also Esha Volunteers.

The Impact could be felt, somewhere in between the softened mumbles of students & the sighs of the Volunteers....

Blind Walk At Government Schools

The experience was nothing short of amazing when the sensitization was carried forward through government schools & awareness was spread starting right at the grass-root level!
" Are there schools for the Blind? How do they study? " quipped Neha, a 10 year old as she completed her Trust Walk exercise...

As the curiosity levels soared & youngsters got not only more aware regarding blindness, but also traces of concern & inquisitiveness could well be seen bubbling in the innocent yet curious eyes of the budding change makers..

" I feel amazing after interacting with these young minds.. I've talked to them about blindness before on  multiple counts as my sister is also going through the same "
-Teacher (Saksham Bal Vikas Sansthan)

It's wondrous how deeply can we impact the lives of these children by making them aware about the blind, sensitizing them so that they develop not only the strength to help & support them but also take inspiration from their tenacity & determination with which they lead their lives..

" So how do they eat? ", asked Arjun, his face gleaming with curiosity

We sensitized them not only about the Blind & how their strength gets them going but also about Braille & how they study!

" Can I learn Braille too? ", quipped curious Sambhav as he looked intently at his teacher

The positive vibes could very well be felt as the drone of noises that schools are known by could be channelled into positive dialogue with the impact very well received by the students.

Blind Walk At Huda Metro Station

As the crowds amassed creating the usual bedlam at the Huda Metro Station, the Esha Volunteers found a great opportunity amidst the apparent chaos..
The Blind Walk at the Huda Metro Station was nothing short of amazing & we were virtually spellbound at the impact we could create in a small span by sensitizing through experience the challenges that the blind come across in their daily lives.
The crowd was divided into pairs of two where one walked with their eyes shut while the other trotted alongside to ensure there are no accidents from the same.

"It was an amazing experience..
This is how we understand how it actually feels to not be able to see what lies ahead..
Yet, hats off to the courage & determination showed by those who lead their lives very normally despite the same"
                                         - Aanchal Gupta (Participant)

Not only did it sensitize people about the discomfort faced by the Blind in their daily chores, but also inspired them to undertake their lives with greater rigor & gratitude.

"I'm amazed at how much the blind can inspire us in the infinite power of the human will & ability, & how less do we make out of the same, despite having all that we're blessed with.. " - Aryan Mehta (Participant)

The Esha Volunteers were able to inspire as also get heaps of inspiration from the experience!

"We are geared up & all set for Mission Sensitisation!"
                                                              - Shivangi Sharma (Volunteer, Esha)

The Esha Volunteers shared their individual experiences after the activity & the enthusiasm seemed to have totally caught a viral trend..

"I feel inspired & it's such an enriching experience"
                                                               - Himanshi Motiani (Volunteer, Esha)

A lot of people we sensitized were coming from office, after having spent a long tiring day & yet were eager to take up the Blind Walk Experience!

"I feel that we need to sensitize more people as very less people think along these lines & you people at Esha are indeed doing a great job"
                                                                              - Samridh Kapoor (Spectator)
The day ended on a positive note with a sense of satisfaction & good vibes !
